Jamshedpur, September 30: Jamshedpur police have directed all police station in-charges to keep their official mobile phones switched on 24×7, with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ehtesham Waqarib warning that officers found unreachable during emergencies could face departmental action.
The directive has been issued to ensure that citizens can contact the police without delay, particularly during night hours and emergencies. The official mobile phones of station in-charges must remain operational at all times and calls received from the public are expected to be attended to promptly.
Police officials said complaints had been received about people being unable to contact station in-charges at night or during emergencies, with some callers reportedly having to make repeated attempts before receiving a response.

Alternative arrangements made mandatory
The SSP has instructed officers to make alternative arrangements if an official mobile phone develops a technical fault. Similarly, when a station in-charge is on leave or away from the police station, an alternative contact mechanism must be put in place to ensure uninterrupted communication with the public.
Any complaint regarding an official phone being switched off or calls going unanswered will be verified, police said. If the complaint is found to be genuine and there is no valid reason for the phone being unavailable, departmental action may follow.
Focus on faster response to complaints
The official mobile phones serve as an important communication channel for reporting crimes, accidents, disputes, thefts, assaults, women’s safety concerns and other emergencies.
Station in-charges have also been directed to act promptly on complaints received at the police station level and avoid making complainants undertake unnecessary visits. Police officials have stressed that even seemingly minor complaints should not be ignored, as timely intervention can prevent disputes from escalating.
The directive is part of efforts to improve police-public communication, strengthen emergency response and ensure greater accessibility of police services across Jamshedpur.
