Dhanbad, Jan 2: Acting Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) Dhanbad Dr Pawan Poddar, in a significant step, has turned down all unpopular decisions of his predecessor Dr Sukhdeo Bhoi for the facility of students.

Dr Poddar has ordered the re-starting of postgraduate (PG) courses in three colleges of Dhanbad and Bokaro and the launching of higher education in regional languages.

A senior official said the University’s Academic Council has already endorsed Dr Poddar’s decision. After getting approval from the Syndicate, the process would be started through the Vice-chancellor Portal.

As per the planning of acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Poddar, the PG course would be started again at RSP College Jharia, SSLNT Women’s College Dhanbad and Bokaro Steel City College, Bokaro.

All three premier institutions of the University had the facilities for PG courses, but last year ( 2023), the then vice-chancellor, Dr Sukhdeo Bhoi, despite strong protests from student unions, shut down the facility there and centralized the PG courses at the university campus.

In the wake of the inconvenience to students, NSUI, ABVP, AJSU, and other student unions launched massive agitation and even sat on a dharna against the decision of Vice-Chancellor Dr Bhoi.

However, the Raj Bhawan sacked Dr Bhoi on October 13, and the acting vice-chancellor, taking cognisance of students’ problems, announced a plan to restart PG courses in colleges.

The students of remote colleges, especially Maithon, Sindri and Bokaro Steel City, need help attending classes at the Dhanbad Bhelatand University campus, where there is no direct public transport facility.

Dr Poddar has also decided to launch PG courses in regional languages. A university official said a proposal has been sent to Raj Bhawan for approval. After getting a nod, PG departments in Kortha, Kurmali, and Santhal would be created.

Sacked V-C Sukhdeo Bhoi had dumped the regional languages of Jharkhand and imposed the Odia language. Students’ unions, especially AJSU, had launched massive agitation against it.
