Ranchi, Feb 8: Chief Minister Hemant Soren highlighted the crucial role of modern technology in agriculture while inaugurating the three-day Agrotech Kisan Mela-2025 at Birsa Agricultural University (BAU), Ranchi. He emphasized that with 80% of Jharkhand’s population dependent on farming, technological advancements are essential for sustainable agricultural growth.

Modernizing Agriculture for a Better Future

Addressing the gathering, CM Soren pointed out that Jharkhand’s unique plateau geography poses challenges for farming, particularly in irrigation. While some areas have natural water sources, others rely on irrigation infrastructure. He stressed the need to integrate modern technology with traditional farming to improve productivity.

He praised Birsa Agricultural University, which has been a pillar of agricultural education in the state for 45 years, producing experts who now guide farmers across India and abroad. He assured that the state government and BAU will work in coordination to enhance farmer support systems.

Government’s Initiatives for Farmers

CM Soren announced several initiatives to uplift farmers, including:

  • Pipeline Irrigation & Lift Irrigation: The government is working to ensure a steady water supply to fields through pipelines and lift irrigation.
  • Kisan Pathshaalas (Farmer Schools): To educate farmers on modern farming techniques, livestock management, and fisheries.
  • Well Construction Scheme: Over one lakh wells will be constructed to provide reliable irrigation, addressing borewell failures.

He acknowledged that many farmers have abandoned farming, and efforts must be made to increase cultivable land in Jharkhand.

Empowering Women Farmers

CM Soren also spoke about the Chief Minister Maiyaan Samman Yojana, under which ₹2,500 per month is provided to women to promote financial independence. Women farmers can use this support for livestock farming, poultry, piggery, and floriculture, making them self-reliant.

He emphasized that Jharkhand is the first state in India actively working to make women financially independent through agriculture.

Release of ‘Birsa Krishi Margdarshika-2025’

On this occasion, CM Soren, along with Agriculture Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey and other dignitaries, released ‘Birsa Krishi Margdarshika-2025’, a guidebook on modern farming practices.

The CM also laid the foundation stone for a Training Hall and Forest Medicine Exhibition Gallery under the National Agricultural Development Scheme.

A Step Towards Agri-Entrepreneurship

Soren emphasized that the government aims to transform farmers into agripreneurs, ensuring better productivity and market access. He urged BAU to develop a comprehensive roadmap to provide better benefits and technology-driven solutions for farmers.

The event saw participation from senior officials, including Vice Chancellor Dr. Sunil Chandra Dubey, Additional Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar, and Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology Director Dr. Sujay Rakshit.

With strong government initiatives and the adoption of modern technology, Jharkhand is moving towards a sustainable and prosperous agricultural future.
