Dhanbad, Dec. 27: Displaced family members of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) today began indefinite gherao of the DVC administrative building, demanding jobs and compensation against their land.

Taking serious note of protests, Dhanbad, Deputy Commissioner Barun Ranjan also reached the Maithon DVC office and stepped in to lift the gherao by arranging a talk between both parties.

DVC land losers

As per their pre-announced programme under the banner of Damodar Valley Vastuhara Sangram Samiti, the land losers reached the DVC administrative building gate in process at around 7 am and blocked all entry and exit points office completely.

The blockade continued till the report was filed (5.30 pm). No officials and staff were allowed to enter or go out. Heavy police force and CISF personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.

Vasutara Sangram Samiti president Basudeo Mahto and general secretary Ashok Mandal ( a senior leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) led the agitation.

Basudeo Mahto said, “ This time, it is do or die agitation of land losers. Either they will take the compensation or die on the agitation spot.”

No jobs or compensation

General Secretary Ashok Mandal alleged that following the agitation of displaced persons, DVC in 1978 formed a panel of land losers to give jobs and compensation. However, to date, neither jobs nor compensation has been given.

“We would continue gherao of the administrative building until compensation is paid,” said Mandal.

JMM district president Lakhi Soren, Gulam Kureshi, Badal Marandi, Binod Bihari Hembram, Ram Nath Soren, Sudhanshu Shekhar Jha, Surendra Nath Hembram, Pravir Bhandari, Ravi Sen, Chhotelal Hembram, Paras Kisku, and Abdul Ayub Ansari addressed the gherao rally of displaced persons.
