Jamshedpur, Dec 12: Former Up Pramukh (deputy head) of West Singhbhum Jila Parishad, Kamal Purti, was shot dead by Naxals at Raigarh village under Gudri police station area in Chakradharpur subdivision of West Singhbhum about 120 km away from here past Monday midnight.

The slain the 42-year-old Up (Deputy) Pramukh was also earlier associated with PLFI, another rebel outfit active in the Gudri region, and his killing is suspected to have a bearing for his connection with the rebel outfit.

Killed on suspicion of being a police informer

Having shot Purti, the Naxals had dropped pamphlets, reportedly by the CPI-Maoist, near the body which is yet to be recovered.

According to sources, an armed squad of Naxals had swooped over Purti’s house past midnight and dragged him out to an open space where they shot him.

As there was a commotion following the Naxals’ invasion, the youths of the village fled their homes in fear of imminent danger. Later they discovered the body of the UPA Pramukh lying near his house.

The sources said that the Deputy Pramukh was killed by the Naxals on suspicion of being a police informer.

A press statement by the West Singhbhum police has confirmed the murder of Kamal Purti. The police have also expressed their suspicion that murder might have been committed by the CPI-Maoist rebels.
