Jamshedpur, April 28: Jharkhand continues to face a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above normal in several districts. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next three days, offering possible relief.

Heatwave intensifies across districts

In the last 24 hours, Daltonganj recorded the highest temperature at 44.8°C, highlighting the intensity of the heatwave. Chaibasa followed at 43.4°C, while Jamshedpur recorded 41.5°C. Ranchi reported 39.9°C, over 3°C above normal, and Bokaro touched 40.1°C.

Night temperatures have also remained high, increasing discomfort. Jamshedpur recorded a minimum of 27.4°C, nearly 3°C above average.

Rainfall has been minimal, with only Bokaro receiving 2.0 mm of rain. Dry weather and clear skies have worsened conditions, especially in urban areas.

According to the IMD, thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 50–60 kmph are likely on April 28 in districts such as Ranchi, Bokaro, Gumla, Hazaribagh, Khunti, Ramgarh, East and West Singhbhum, Simdega, Saraikela-Kharsawan, Koderma, Lohardaga, Dhanbad, Giridih and Jamtara.

On April 29, similar weather is expected across the state, with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph. By April 30, conditions may turn more unstable, with chances of hailstorms in districts including Chatra, Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur, Dumka, Deoghar and Ranchi.

Advisory and outlook

“The ongoing heatwave may continue, but incoming thunderstorm activity could bring temporary relief,” an IMD official said, warning about lightning strikes and strong winds.

Authorities have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and remain indoors during storms as Jharkhand prepares for changing weather conditions after extreme heat.
