Dhanbad, June 3: The Jharkhand chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly opposed the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) proposed integration of Ayurveda with the MBBS curriculum—a move commonly referred to as “Mixopathy.”

IMA Jharkhand President Dr. A.K. Singh and Secretary Dr. Pradeep Kumar Singh urged doctors and MBBS students across the state to unite and protest against the proposal.

“Mixopathy poses a serious threat to patient safety and undermines the standards of the medical profession. It also encourages quackery. We are firmly against merging alternative medical systems with modern medicine,” the two senior IMA officials stated.

Concerns Over Patient Safety and Professional Standards
The NMC is reportedly collaborating with the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, to explore the integration of Ayurveda into the MBBS curriculum.
Responding to this, the IMA Jharkhand leaders clarified that they are not against alternative medicine systems themselves but warned that such integration would be a dangerous precedent.

“Mixopathy will ultimately harm patients, not doctors. Once the quality of treatment is compromised, it is the patient who suffers,” said Dr. Vikash Kumar, Joint Secretary of the IMA Ranchi chapter, which expressed full support for the state body’s stand.
District Chapters Show Solidarity
Several district-level IMA chapters have voiced support for the state association’s stance. Dr. Gauri Shankar, Secretary of IMA Deoghar, stated that his chapter is completely aligned with the state leadership and will follow its decisions on the matter.

Similarly, Dr. Rakeshinder Singh, Secretary of the Dhanbad IMA chapter, expressed concern about patient safety and healthcare quality. “We stand with the state IMA. For the sake of safe and effective treatment, we will oppose this proposal,” he said.

MSN, Junior Doctors Oppose Integration
Adding further momentum to the opposition, leaders from the Medical Students Network (MSN) and the Junior Doctors Network (JDN) have also rejected the integration plan. Dr. Sushil Kumar, State Chairman of MSN, and Dr. Raghvendra Kumar, Secretary of the JDN State Chapter from MGMMCH, both announced their firm opposition to including Ayurveda in MBBS training.
