Jharkhand likely to witness light to moderate rain, thunderstorms till May 9

Jamshedpur, May 6: A spell of unsettled weather is expected to affect large parts of eastern India over the next few days, with meteorological conditions favouring light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across Jharkhand and Bihar.

According to the latest weather assessment, skies are likely to remain partly cloudy on May 6 and 7, with chances of light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms at several places intensifying between May 8 and May 9.

Trough Systems Increasing Moisture and Atmospheric Instability

Meteorological officials said a trough currently extends from a cyclonic circulation over the central parts of south Madhya Pradesh to Bihar, passing through north Chhattisgarh, southeast Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand at around 0.9 km above mean sea level.

The system is drawing moisture-laden winds into the region, leading to increased atmospheric instability and favourable conditions for rain and thunderstorm activity.

In addition, a north-south trough running roughly along longitude 89°E, north of latitude 21°N, at an altitude of nearly 3.1 km above mean sea level, is further supporting convective weather activity.

The interaction between these systems is expected to trigger localised showers, thunderstorms, and occasional gusty winds across several districts of Jharkhand and Bihar.

Relief From Heat Likely, Minor Disruptions Possible

Residents in urban and semi-urban areas may witness brief but intense spells of rainfall over the coming days. The weather activity is expected to provide temporary relief from rising temperatures, though intermittent showers could disrupt traffic and daily routines.

“I’ve noticed the weather turning quite unpredictable over the past few days. The clouds build up suddenly, and we get short bursts of rain. It does bring relief from the heat, but it also makes commuting a bit tricky,” said a resident of Sonari in Jamshedpur.

Weather Department Advises Caution During Thunderstorms

Weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, especially in open areas, and to stay updated with local weather forecasts as conditions may change rapidly.

People have also been urged to avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning activity.
