SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, March 16: On Saturday, the cow protection group rescued 140 cattle loaded in 17 pickup vans on the interstate GT Road under Bagodar police station, around 63.5 km from Giridih district headquarters.

The cattle were reportedly being smuggled from the region to Bengal.

Drivers escape

Bagodar—Saria SDPO Dhananajay Kumar Ram and Bagodar police station officer in charge Sukh Sagar Singh Choudhary told the media that cattle were being smuggled to Bengal. The drivers of all 17 pickup vans escaped from the spot.

The official said that in the morning on GT Road (NH-2), when the cow protection group, based on suspicion, tried to stop pick–up vans near Ganda under Bagodar police station, drivers began to drive away. In the course of escaping, three vans turned turtles. Having seen cattle, cow protection activists chased and caught the remaining vehicles and informed the police.

One cow, two calves die

One cow and two calves died in the accident. “All pickup vans have been seized, and co-cattle will be handed over to Gaushala,” said a police official.

The police official said the investigation is being done to identify a local syndicate smuggling cows from this region.

A passerby on GT road told media persons that as drivers of pick–up vans fled, residents of nearby villages had taken some cows to their houses.
