SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, June 11: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Aditya Ranjan on Wednesday handed over a cheque of ₹50,000 to mothers of two labourers from Dhanbad who were crushed by a goods train near Kusumkasa railway station in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district on Tuesday.

While presenting the compensation cheque, DC Ranjan urged all labourers from the district working outside Jharkhand to register themselves on the shramadhan.jharkhand.gov.in portal. He said this would help them access government welfare schemes in case of accidents or adverse situations.

Tragic Incident and Allegations Against Contractor

The two deceased labourers—Krishna Ray and Dillu Rai—were residents of Laxmanpur village in Topchachi block of Dhanbad. They had gone to work at a private company, Dynasore Concrete Treatment Pvt. Ltd., in Balod district through a contractor.

According to reports, the two were run over by a goods train while trying to escape from the work site. Family members claimed the contractor had taken them and five other youths from the Dhanbad–Bokaro region on May 10, promising a daily wage of ₹600.

However, on June 8 (Sunday), the contractor paid only ₹400. When the workers protested, they were allegedly beaten and held captive by the contractor and local goons.

On Tuesday morning, five of the youths tried to flee for Dhanbad. Tragically, two of them were hit by a train during the escape.

District to Launch PF and ESI Drive

On this occasion, DC Aditya Ranjan also announced that the district administration will launch a special campaign to ensure all industrial units employing more than 10 labourers provide Provident Fund (PF) and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) coverage.

He urged contractors and unit heads to recognize that their operations depend heavily on labourers and that they should therefore extend maximum benefits to their workforce.
