Daltonganj, March 22: Garhwa police are keeping surveillance on the river route between Jharkhand’s Garhwa and Bihar’s Rohtas.
There is a perennial river, the Sone, in the north of Garhwa district, where boats ferry passengers waterway the whole day long.
There is hardly any post-sunset boat ferrying; nevertheless, day-long ferrying has its own vulnerabilities, like sneaking in and out of dubious elements and illicit arms, etc.
Garhwa SP Deepak Pandey told the Jharkhand Story correspondent, “We understand we are to take care of the riverine sides too. Here boats make several trips between Garhwa district and Rohtas.”
“It’s not only the passengers who come and go by waterway. There may be rogues disguised as passengers. We are determined to flush them out,” reiterated the SP.
Pandey said, “I inspected interstate check posts. I have directed my boys to be tough with the offenders, but for the law-abiding people, there must not be any amount of inconvenience or discomfort to them. Police must respect law-abiding people.”

Pandey said, “I have directed my check post officials to maintain a register with entries done quite properly, like vehicle type and its number, searched for huge cash, precious metals like gold and silver, drugs, illicit liquor, illicit arms, etc.”
The SP said, “To date, it is illicit liquor that my boys have pounded on. Huge cash is yet to be fished out.”
There are drop gates and slide barriers to check on the inter-district and interstate check posts.
Garhwa has set up 5 interstate check posts. It is equipped with web cameras, reminded the SP.
Pandey added further, “Our Nagar Untari has NH connectivity to UP’s Wyndhamganj. Here too our surveillance is high.”
IG of police Palamu zone Narendra Kumar Singh has directed the 3 SPs of the zone Garhwa, Latehar and Palamu to ensure bonding down shady characters and character potentially dangerous to polls under sections 107, 110 and 151 of the CrPC.
If section 151 is preventive detention for 24 hours, section 110 is for harbouring and protecting mischievous people, and section 107 is for restraining them from indulging in any aberration.
The check posts have sandbags for sentry doing 24×7 duties in all weather.
