Dhanbad, March 11: Jamshedpur’s Rahul Kumar won the singles title in the Maithon Open Badminton Championship, organized by Badminton Club Maithon at DVC Shram Kalyan Kendra.

Abhishek Kumar of Deoghar and Aakanksha Sundi of Dhanbad won the singles title in the under-15 boys’ and girls’ events, respectively. At the same time, Rahul Kumar, paired with Abhishek Kumar, bagged the men’s doubles title.

In the men’s singles final, Rahul Kumar defeated Abhishek Kumar of Jamshedpur 21-18, 21- 19. Later, paired with Abhishek Kumar, he beat the Maithon pair of Aman and Jonty 21-15, 21-19 in the final.

Earlier, Abhishek Kumar of Deoghar beat Anish Chakraborty of Mihijam in the boys’ under -15 singles final, while in the girl’s final, Aakanksha Sundi of Dhanbad beat Anjali Sinha 2112, 21-17.

Maithon Power Limited (MPL) HR head Supratik Mukherjee was the chief guest, and Pravin Raut (operation head) was the guest of honour. Both the guests gave away trophies to winners and runners-up.

The chief guest, Supratik Mukherjee, addressed the players on the occasion and said that sports activities develop high-level capacity in people. “That is why the government, in its New Education Policy, has made sports a part of education,” he said.

More than 125 players from Jharkhand and Bengal participated in the two-day championship. Alok Bhattacharya, Ayan Ghosh, Dipto Chatterjee, Aman, and Jontyn made the tournament successful.
