Daltonganj, May 17: There are two tasks to police in Palamu. First to vote on May 20 and second to tackle post-poll results. Both are sensitive. Voting is as serious as the counting of votes and later its aftermath. So, it’s a busy time for the police here.
Palamu police are as determined and committed to having free and fair polling on May 20 here as it lived to the expectations of one and all in its May 13 voting, when 326 polling stations in Palamu’s Panki assembly constituency following it being a segment of Chatra Lok Sabha constituency, will witness voting on May 20.
There is the same exercise for care and caution for the May 20 polling. The deployment of forces is meticulously organized with no tinge of exhibitionism.
However, police in Palamu would keep their eyes wide open on June 4 i.e. the day of counting and results.
Close finish between BJP and RJD
Post May 13 survey here points to a close finish between the two rival contestants, the BJP’s Vishnu Dayal Ram and the RJD’s Mamta Bhuiyan.
The Jharkhand Story correspondent today spoke to SP Palamu Reeshma Ramesan to know how the police will be doing on the day of reckoning on June 4 when poll results will come out.

Police ready to tackle any situation: SP
“Every day is a new day for police. June 4 will be a day of importance. Police in Palamu are in total readiness to tackle any situation arising out of any uncontrolled passion or hype-filled sentiments. Our police will prove its mettle,” added Reeshma Ramesan.
Reminded that in a close finish situation in the election, mood swings from peace to turbulence where there is apprehension of supporters of X or Y political party going amok to which Reeshma Ramesan said, “Our police are capable of handling any eruption of passion. We go tough within the ambit of the law.”
Social media under close watch
Again pestered where it is a lead-trail game, rumour flies in tonnes and people are fed with fake or half-baked information even to the extent of casting enormous allegations of favouritism or partisan attitude against the administration towards X or Y candidate/party to which Reeshma Ramesan said, “Our eyes and ears will be too wide open on every single social media and what’s app groups and we understand people will think about the consequences if they indulge in anything contrary to the law of the land.”
Celebratory firing is done in the victory processions. How to deal with it?
Victory procession shouldn’t be reduced to be a tool to taunt: SP
Reeshma Ramesan said, “Release of arms will be done post counting/result and as per the instructions laid down by the ECI. Further, there can’t be any leeway to the celebratory firing. It can’t be accepted.”
A winner in the election has a right to have a victory procession but here in Palamu victory procession is played under the garb of jeers and taunts where the particular community-based voters are blatantly reminded that their bulk voting went in vain and now it will be a harder time to them.
Reeshma Ramesan said, “Let victory procession be a victory procession in word and spirit. It should not be reduced to become a tool to jeer or taunt anyone or any community. No one can have this liberty. There will be a posse of police force with every victory procession.”
The SP was asked that by the time poll results were here the CAPF (central armed police force) would be pushed off from here and so it would be on the shoulders of the police to handle it to which the SP said, “It’s the district police that deals with the law and order situation. Our police do it most sincerely and professionally. There is nothing to worry about.”
Reeshma Ramesan said this May 13 polling here we had 55 Quick Response Teams and our boys were on the sprint everywhere. She went on to add there will not be an inch scale down to our security cover. It will be visible and effective.
