Ranchi, Aug 8: Dr Shailesh Kumar Mishra, Senior Professor at the Government Sanskrit College, said on Thursday that Maharishi Patanjali, through his Yoga Sutras, has defined the importance of self-control, meditation, and morality.
Dr Mishra was addressing students at a programme organized by the Department of Sanskrit at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University on the eve of Patanjali Jayanti.
Quoting Maharishi Patanjali, he said that yoga is not merely a physical exercise but a means of harmonizing the soul and body. “Each limb of the Ashtanga Yoga propounded by Maharishi Patanjali is a path to bring discipline, self-control, and mental peace to human life,” he added.
Dr Mishra further stated that in today’s fast-paced lifestyle, Patanjali’s principles and the practice of yoga are highly relevant. “Yoga helps us stay stress-free and healthy. Regular practice of yoga not only enhances our physical capabilities but also brings mental peace and stability,” he added.

Maharishi Patanjali’s contributions
Presiding over the programme, Dr Dhananjay Vasudeo Dwivedi, Head of the Sanskrit Department at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi, said that Maharishi Patanjali has given the Sanskrit language an organized and scientific form through the Mahabhashya. “His works are not only important for the study of the language but also make invaluable contributions to the vast field of Indian philosophy and knowledge. Through the Yoga Sutras, he presented the scientific methods of yoga, which are still extremely important for our physical and mental health today,” he added.
He further said that the works of Maharishi Patanjali are an important part of the rich heritage of Indian knowledge, philosophy, and culture. “We need to preserve and advance this heritage so that future generations can also benefit from Patanjali’s invaluable contributions,” he added.
Departmental teacher Dr Shrimithra said that students should study Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and incorporate them into their lives. She stated that yoga is not limited to postures; it is a comprehensive way of life that guides us in every aspect of life.

Departmental teacher Dr Jagadamba Prasad said that Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are important not only for physical health but also for mental and spiritual balance. He stated that yoga is not just a system of exercise but a means to establish harmony between the soul, mind, and body.
Guest of honour Parangat Khalkho said that in this competitive and stressful lifestyle, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras will help maintain mental peace and balance. He said that Patanjali’s Yoga Shastra inspires us towards self-control, discipline, and inner peace, which are very essential in today’s era.
Department student Sarvottama Kumari introduced the topic with a detailed discussion of Patanjali’s life and his Yoga Sutras.
The programme began with the lighting of the lamp. Vedic chanting was presented by students Pallavi, Prerna, and others. Shivam Narayan presented the auspicious chanting. The welcome song was presented by Prerna and her classmates. Anamika Kumari demonstrated various yoga postures and explained their importance. Following this, Tanu Singh presented a beautiful song, making the event more enchanting. The event was anchored by Pratima Chauhan.
