Rohan Shandilya receives champion prize from chief guest

Dhanbad, Jan 22: Rohan Shandilya of Jamshedpur bagged the Chaibasa All India Open Rapid Rating Chess tournament for the Navin Kumar Sinha Memorial Trophy which concluded at Chaibasa St Xavier Welfare Centre.

Leaving five top-seeded players behind, Rohan (1766 rating) bagged eight points in the nine rounds of the tournament. Two players, top-seeded Abhishek Das (2157 rating) of Jamshedpur and Sudhir Kumar Sinha (2012 rating) of Bihar held Rohan to a draw. Rohan got a cash prize of Rs 20,000.

Bengal’s Subhabrata Roy (1576 rating)  also got  8 points in the tournament but on the basis of progressive points, he had to contend with the second position. He got a cash prize of Rs 12,000. Bengl’s junior champion Arpan Das (1993) got the third position with 7.5 points.

Sudhir Kumar Sinha of Bihar also earned 7.5 points but he slipped to the fourth position.

Nine players, Manish Sharma, Shubham Kumar, Pritam Singh, Debanjan Sinha, Rounak Pathak (Bengal), Abhishek Sonu (Bihar), Basant Khandelwal, Shashwat Mishra and Kaushal Kumar Jha (Bihar) earned equal 7 points each and they left on 5th to 13th position in the ranking.

All eyes in the tournament were on Jharkhand champion Pritam Singh (1917 rating) who got the seventh position with 7 points. Odisha star player Siddharth Nanda (1210 rating) disappointed with his performance as he earned only 6.5 points and was left on the 21st spot. Similarly, Abhishek Das of Jamshedpur (2157 rating) was given the top seed in the tournament but he mustered only 6.5 points and was left on the 14th position.

The tournament was organized by the West Singhbhum District Chess Association. General Secretary Basant Khandelwal said the top 25 players were given cash prizes.

Junior boys and girls champions

Manish Kumar Mohit of Bengal became the champion of unrated players with 6.5 points and got a cash prize of Rs 1500.

Mayan Jha and Swastik Singh emerged as winner and runner-up respectively in boys’ under-11.

Nikunj Agrawal and Arkapraval Pal became winner and runner-up respectively in U13, whereas Arnav Baibhaw and Anuj Prakash emerged winner and runner-up respectively in the U-15 category.

In the girls’ category, Arpita Kumari and Eshani Choudhary became winner and runner-up respectively in  U-11, Navieka Jaiswal and Ishaani Patra emerged winner and runners up respectively in the U-13 category, whereas Advika Mohanti and Nistha Das became winner and runners up respectively in the U-15 category.

In the final ceremony district sports officer Rupa Rani Tirkey was chief guest and she along with other dignitaries gave away prizes to participants. Association’s president Mukund Rungta proposed a vote of thanks. Sohan Mudra, Jahangir Alam, SC Tripathi, Anant Lal Vishwakarma, Arun Prasad and others were also present.
