Jharkhand: Science Advisory Board formed to advise JCSTI, says Director

Ranchi, Feb 2: Director of Department of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE), Government of Jharkhand Garima Singh said that State Science Advisory Board (SSAB) has been constituted to advise Jharkhand Council on Science, Technology & Innovation (JCSTI) on the various activities to be undertaken to promote Science and Technology in the State, formulating Science and Technology policy for the State, and identifying the Science and Technology needs of the State.

Garima Singh highlights DHTE efforts to foster research and innovation in Jharkhand

The SSAB shall be chaired by the Member Secretary-cum-Principal Secretary of DHTE. Garima Singh was speaking on the concluding day of state level interactive workshop for the promotion of research and development in the field of science and technology among Higher and Technical Education Institutions of Jharkhand organized by the DHTE at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University.

She said that efforts are on to establish Central Instrumentation Facility in Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi for the promotion of Research activities. This centre will promote research work in the field of Science and Technology.

She added that the DHTE grants financial assistance to support researchers in all streams who work as teachers in universities, and colleges.

While quantum of research assistance in Science can go up to the maximum of Rs. 5 lakhs, similarly, for research projects in Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Literature, Arts, Law and allied disciplines financial assistance can go up to a maximum of Rs. 3 lakhs.

She informed that to promote Scientific temper among students two Mobile Science Exhibition buses themed “Food & Health” and “Machines in Daily Life” are currently traversing across the states to promote scientific thinking in Schools.

She added that to recognize the research and innovation carried out by the students and faculty members, the DHTE has drafted detailed guidelines for Jharkhand State Higher Education Awards Scheme (JSHEAS).

It aims to award students and faculty members doing credible research in the fields of Economics, Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, Basic Sciences, Maths, Tribal Languages and Non-Tribal Languages.

Dr Anil Kumar emphasizes role of IPR in safeguarding traditional knowledge

Speaking on the Role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in protecting R & D Outcomes, Dr. Anil Kumar, Senior Scientist, CSIR-TKDL said that IPRs protect one’s creativity and inventions.

Talking about the rich cultural heritage of India, he informed about the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), which is a pioneering initiative under the joint collaboration of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Ministry of AYUSH. It aims to prevent exploitation and to protect Indian traditional knowledge at Patent Offices worldwide.

Traditional Knowledge (TK) is a valuable yet vulnerable asset to indigenous and local communities who depend on TK for their livelihood. He added that TKDL was conceptualized to overcome the language and format barrier by systematically and scientifically converting and structuring the available contents of the ancient texts.

He further said that TKDL is the first of its kind prior-art database of traditional knowledge globally and has proven to be an effective deterrent against bio-piracy.

JTU VC Calls for industry-driven curriculum and internship

Vice-chancellor of Jharkhand Technical University Prof. Dinesh Kumar Singh said that in today’s time there is a great need to develop a strong relationship between academia and industry. He said that while designing curriculum, attention should be given present day needs. He further said that internship should be made part and parcel of the curriculum.

IIT Madras COO advocates industry-academia collaboration

Speaking on Excellence in R&D through Industry Academia Interactions Rajendra Mootha, Chief Operating Officer, IIT Madras said that focus should be given to facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and establishing research centres focused on real-world challenges in collaboration with industries. He also talked about research parks which motivate entrepreneurship and startups for the students.

Experts address diverse issues

Suraj Prakash, Chief Executive Officer, TEXMin, IIT-ISM Dhanbad took a session on ‘Modes to establish cutting edge Centre of Excellences in Technical Education Institutions. He also talked about disaster management by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Dr. Umesh Kumar Sharma, Scientist F, DST, GoI spoke on the Schemes of GoI for the Promotion of Research and Development in Higher and Technical Education.

Dr. Pravakar Mohanty, Scientist E, DST, GoI talked about Opportunities for R & D Grants: DST perspective.

Dr. Priyank Kumar, Professor-in-charge, Department of Space Engineering & Rocketry, Birla Institute of Technology delivered lecture on ‘How to secure grants for Research Projects’.

Shri Sayyad Riyaz Ahemad, Under Secretary, Department of Higher and Technical Education summarized the outcomes of the workshop. He informed about various schemes for academic fraternity sponsored by Government of India and Government of Jharkhand.
