Ranchi, February 14: Students and faculty of St. Xavier’s College commemorated the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu on National Women’s Day on February 13.
Sarojini Naidu was a political activist and poet who contributed to India’s women’s rights and independence movement.
Fr CD Brouwer Auditorium
The function was held in the Fr CD Brouwer Auditorium. President of Women Cell, St Xavier’s College Ranchi, Dr Bharti Singh, Advocate of Jharkhand High Court Abhinay Preet, journalist, Dainik Hindustan Ranchi Shreyasi Mishra, along with Principal of St. Xavier’s College Ranchi Rev. Fr. Dr Nabore Lakra SJ, Rev. Fr. Robert Kujur, Fr. Alex Ekka, Dr B.K Sinha and faculty members were present on occasion.

Contributions of Sarojini Naidu
The event started with an eloquent speech delivered by Dr Bharti, who shared the contributions of Sarojini Naidu and talked about the importance of the Women’s Day celebration, followed by Rev Fr. Robert Kujur, who shared his views on men’s victimization due to misuse of women’s rights. Fr. Nabore Lakra shared with the students the achievements of female alumni of the college and encouraged the students to achieve their dreams.

Gender sensitisation
Advocate Abhinay Preet shed light on women-specific legislation such as section 44(4) Cr. P.C and section 437Cr.P.C. He further elucidated the topic of gender sensitisation and its importance in society. Journalist Shreyashi Mishra shared her views on women’s employment, the decline in female labourers, and the work environment issues women face.
Movie ‘Kalpana; screened
A movie screening held by the mass communication department titled Kalpana mirrored the misconception of Indian society towards women.
A street play, ‘Mefuz Hai’, enacted by the students, showed gender conditioning begins at birth and how society continues to discriminate against men and women.
A photo exhibition was held towards the end of the programme.
The event provided a platform which allowed students to showcase creativity on social issues, educate students on women’s rights and bring awareness to problems faced by women.
