Jharkhand to get relief from heavy rain as depression weakens

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, July 31: After several days of widespread rainfall triggered by a deep depression over central India, Jharkhand is set to witness a gradual easing of heavy rain activity as the weather system steadily weakens and moves away from the region.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression over western parts of central Chhattisgarh and adjoining east Madhya Pradesh has moved southwestwards and is expected to weaken into a depression before continuing west-northwestwards across Vidarbha and adjoining south Madhya Pradesh.

As the system shifts away, its influence over Jharkhand is expected to diminish significantly, bringing temporary relief from intense monsoon showers.

With the weather system weakening, the spell of heavy rainfall that affected several parts of the state over the past few days is likely to subside.

However, the IMD has cautioned that weather conditions will remain unstable. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely at isolated places across Jharkhand from July 31 to August 3.

Monsoon Conditions Still Active

Meteorologists said the monsoon trough continues to extend across central India, while an east-west shear zone persists over the region.

These prevailing synoptic conditions are expected to trigger scattered convective activity across the state but are unlikely to produce the widespread heavy rainfall experienced earlier this week.

IMD Advises Caution During Thunderstorms

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under isolated trees, and stay away from open fields during lightning activity.

Farmers and people working outdoors have also been urged to monitor local weather updates before undertaking fieldwork or other outdoor activities.

An IMD official said, “The deep depression is moving away and weakening steadily, leading to a noticeable reduction in heavy rainfall over Jharkhand. While isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds will continue over the next few days, the state is expected to experience a temporary lull in intense monsoon activity.”
