Jharkhand Weather: IMD issues heavy rain alert till July 12

Jamshedpur, July 8: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across parts of Jharkhand over the next few days, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated locations till July 12. The alert comes even as the state’s seasonal monsoon rainfall deficit remains at 34 per cent.

Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Forecast Across Jharkhand

According to the latest IMD forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places across the state on July 8, 9, 11 and 12.

The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall alert for the northeastern districts of Jharkhand on July 8.

On July 12, heavy rain is likely at isolated places in the central districts of Ranchi, Lohardaga and Gumla, along with the adjoining Latehar district in northwestern Jharkhand.

Weather Systems Driving the Rainfall

The prevailing weather conditions are being influenced by a well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southwest Uttar Pradesh, which continues to persist.

The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 9.6 km above mean sea level and is expected to move north-northwestward before recurving towards the northeast.

The seasonal monsoon trough currently stretches from northwest Rajasthan to northeast Bangladesh, passing through the centre of the low-pressure area, Jharkhand and north Gangetic West Bengal.

Another upper-air trough extending from the northeast Arabian Sea to Sikkim is also supporting enhanced moisture incursion over eastern India.

Officials at the Ranchi Meteorological Centre said conditions remain favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over the remaining parts of northwestern India, paving the way for the monsoon to cover the entire country within the next two to three days.

Jharkhand Records 34% Monsoon Rainfall Deficit

Despite the forecast of widespread rainfall, Jharkhand continues to face a significant monsoon shortfall.

As of July 8, the state had received 174.2 mm of rainfall against the normal 265 mm, leaving it with a seasonal rainfall deficit of 34 per cent.

Meteorologists said the upcoming spell of rain is expected to improve soil moisture and partially reduce the rainfall deficit. However, sustained rainfall over the coming weeks will be necessary to bring the state’s monsoon performance closer to normal.
