Jamshedpur, March 19: A spell of severe weather is likely to impact Jharkhand, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an Orange Alert for Friday (March 20), warning of thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds across the state.

According to the forecast, north-eastern and adjoining central parts of Jharkhand may witness hailstorms along with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph. Western, southern, and central regions are also likely to experience thunderstorms with wind speeds of 50–60 kmph, which may cause damage to crops, trees, and power infrastructure.

Systems driving the change

The weather shift is due to multiple atmospheric systems. An upper air cyclonic circulation over central Madhya Pradesh and a trough extending from southeast Rajasthan to north Chhattisgarh are influencing conditions. Another cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh is further increasing instability, creating conditions for intense weather activity over Jharkhand.

In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms has been reported at isolated places. A hailstorm in Majhgaon (West Singhbhum) indicated increasing intensity. Maximum temperatures between 34°C and 36°C have also contributed to atmospheric instability.

IMD’s Ranchi centre has issued a nowcast warning for rain and thunderstorms in Gumla, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela-Kharsawan.

Outlook ahead

Unsettled weather is expected to continue on March 21, with thunderstorms, lightning, and winds of 40–50 kmph likely at isolated places.

What is an Orange Alert?

An Orange Alert means “be prepared” for severe weather that may disrupt normal life and pose safety risks.

Residents have been advised to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors during storms, and not take shelter under trees or near electric poles.
