Jamshedpur, March 2: In what is suspected to be a case of drunk driving, a 34-year-old youth was killed on being hit by an unknown vehicle on Mango-Azadnagar road under the Azadnagar Thana area in Mango at the small hours on Saturday.

Another youth who was a pillion-rider was seriously injured in the mishap and has been admitted to the MGM Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH).

The youth who was killed on the spot was identified as Amit Tiwari, a resident of Bhalubasa in the Sitaram Thana area whereas the one seriously injured has been identified as Mohammed Khalid, a resident of Zakirnagar in Mango.

Though the mishap took place near Ishu Bhavan around 2.30 am today, the matter came to the people’s notice after the dawn only.

A police party had rushed both the victims to the medical college hospital where one of them was declared brought dead.

The deceased was an alcoholic

According to the bereaved family members, Amit would consume liquor regularly.

One of the family members said last night Amit took his dinner and came out of the house on his bike, informing that he was going to a friend’s house in Mango.

“He did not return home throughout the night. In the morning, we got to know from the police that he was killed in a road mishap” said the victim’s sister-in-law while talking to this correspondent.

“Amit would run a PDS store at Bhalubasa, but due to being alcoholic, the store became non-functional for the past couple of months, ” said another member.

Police using CCTV to detect killer vehicle

The police have recovered the body and sent it to the medical college mortuary for autopsy.

The police said given the background of Amit Tiwari, it is suspected that he was riding the bike under the influence of liquor and was eventually hit by an unknown vehicle.

“We are trying to detect the killer vehicle by means of CCTV footage and also waiting for the autopsy report to know whether Amit fell victim to the mishap due to being drunk, said the OC, Azadnagar while talking to The Jharkhand Story.
