New Delhi, April 16: Justice BR Gavai is set to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India, with CJI Sanjiv Khanna formally recommending his name to the Centre ahead of his retirement on May 13.

If the government approves the recommendation — in line with the seniority principle followed in such appointments — Justice Gavai will assume office on May 14 and serve until November 2025.
His elevation will be historically significant, as he will be only the second person from the Scheduled Caste community to hold the top judicial post, after Justice K G Balakrishnan (2007–2010).

Though his tenure as CJI will span just six months, it carries symbolic weight for representation and inclusivity in the judiciary.

A native of Maharashtra, Justice Gavai was appointed to the Supreme Court in May 2019. Over the years, he has served on several important benches and is widely respected for his clarity in reasoning and constitutional outlook.
