New Delhi, March 10: Justice Joymalya Bagchi of the Calcutta High Court has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court, as per a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday.

His elevation places him in line to become the Chief Justice of India in May 2031 after Justice K V Viswanathan retires on May 25, 2031. However, his tenure will be relatively short, lasting just over four months until his retirement on October 2, 2031.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recently recommended Justice Bagchi’s name for appointment, considering the current composition of the apex court, which currently has only one judge from the Calcutta High Court, Justice Dipankar Datta.

Justice Bagchi’s judicial career began with his appointment to the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. He was later transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021, before being repatriated to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021, where he has continued to serve.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the appointment on social media platform X, stating that the President of India, after consulting the Chief Justice of India, had exercised constitutional authority to appoint Justice Bagchi to the Supreme Court.
