New Delhi, Dec 19: The Lok Sabha suspended forty-nine opposition MPs for the rest of the winter session on Tuesday. The day before, 33 MPs had been suspended from the House for “misconduct.”

Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, and Karti Chidambaram of the Congress, Supriya Sule of the NCP, Dimple Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, Farooq Abdullah of the NCP, S Senthilkumar of the DMK, Sushil Kumar Rinku of the Aam Aadmi Party, and Sudip Bandhopadhyay of the Trinamool Congress are among the suspended members.

Following adjournments in the House, where opposition members raised slogans and held up placards to press their demands, the action was taken. In response to the December 13 security lapse at Parliament, they have been demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah.

The motion to suspend the members was made by Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.

141 MPs in total suspended in Parliament’s winter session

On Monday, a total of 78 Members of Parliament, comprising 33 from the Lok Sabha and 45 from the Rajya Sabha, were suspended for the remaining duration of the winter session. This action was taken amid chaos triggered by opposition parties demanding a statement from Amit Shah regarding the incident of Parliament security breach.

Earlier on December 14, one Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien and 13 Lok Sabha MPs were suspended for unruly behaviour.

Opposition frustrated over results of state assembly polls: Pralhad Joshi

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi mentioned that the suspension of members occurred due to their use of placards, and there was a consensus among all MPs that such behaviour would not be tolerated in the new Parliament building. He underscored that the opposition members had breached established rules and showed disrespect towards the Chair.

Taking aim at Congress and other opposition parties, he remarked that their discontent was stemming from the results of the recent state assembly polls.

In the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi stated, “It was decided not to bring placards inside the House. Due to desperation after losing recent elections, they are taking such steps. This is the reason we are bringing a proposal (to suspend MPs).”
