Stavanger, June 8: Magnus Carlsen and Ju Wenjun triumphed by becoming champions at the Norway Chess tournament in Stavanger on Friday. Carlsen secured a decisive victory in the men’s section with 17.5 points, while Ju dominated the women’s section with 19 points.

In the final round, local hero Magnus Carlsen defeated Fabiano Caruana of the United States in an Armageddon match. His closest competitor, Hikaru Nakamura (USA), was also defeated in Armageddon by India’s R. Praggnanandhaa.

Nakamura managed to finish in second place with 15.5 points, while Praggnanandhaa took third with 14.5 points. Alireza Firouzja of France, accumulating 13.5 points, ended in fourth place after delivering another defeat to World Champion Ding Liren.

In the women’s section, capping off her campaign on a high note, Ju Wenjun defeated compatriot Lei Tingjie in the classical game. Ju claimed first place, followed by Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine as the runner-up with 16 points. Lei Tingjie finished in third place with 14.5 points.

On the final day, there was disappointment for the Indian women as both suffered losses in Armageddon. R. Vaishali was defeated by Pia Cramling of Sweden, while Koneru Humpy fell to Anna Muzychuk.
