PINAKI MAJUMDAR
Jamshedpur, January 5: A major rail disaster was narrowly averted on Monday after a MEMU train on the Ranchi–Lohardaga route was stopped in time due to structural damage detected on a railway bridge over the Shankh river.
Cracks Found on Bridge, Train Halted in Time
The Ranchi–Chandwa–Tori MEMU (Train No. 68027), which departed Ranchi around 9 am with an unusually heavy passenger load, was halted a few kilometres before Lohardaga station.
Railway staff noticed cracks in the bridge girder and damage to one of the pillars, prompting immediate action. The timely intervention by alert railway personnel prevented the train from reaching the vulnerable stretch, potentially saving hundreds of lives.

Passengers Safely Evacuated
Soon after the train was stopped, panic gripped passengers. However, on being informed about the compromised condition of the bridge, safety protocols were immediately activated.
Passengers were safely deboarded and escorted to a secure location along the track. Many were seen expressing relief and gratitude that the train was halted before crossing the damaged bridge.
Senior Railway Officials Rush to Spot
Following the incident, the Ranchi Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), along with a technical inspection team, rushed to the site.
Railway officials said that detailed inspection and repair work are currently underway and that train operations on the route will resume only after safety clearance is granted.
Railway Issues Safety Alert
A South Eastern Railway spokesperson stated that passenger safety remains the top priority and confirmed that an alert has been issued across the section. Technical teams have been placed on high vigil to prevent any further risk.
