Bhubaneshwar, June 5: The 24-year-old tenure of BJD president and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik came to an end on Wednesday when he handed in his resignation to Odisha Governor Raghubar Das at the Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, following a crushing defeat in the State Assembly and Parliamentary elections.

The Biju Janata Dal, which has governed Odisha since 1997, was defeated by the BJP, ending Naveen Patnaik’s 24-year tenure as Chief Minister.

The Bharatiya Janata Party claimed victory in 78 out of the 147 assembly seats, surpassing the majority mark of 74. The Biju Janata Dal secured 51 seats, while the Indian National Congress obtained 14 seats.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP achieved significant success, winning 20 out of the 21 parliamentary seats in the state, while the Congress secured the remaining seat.
