THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, July 30: In a money laundering case, the Supreme Court granted bail to former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik on medical grounds on Tuesday.

Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma, who were on the bench, acknowledged the counsel’s submissions regarding Malik’s multiple health issues.

The Supreme Court stated that Malik’s medical bail will remain in effect until the Bombay High Court resolves his regular bail application.

Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, speaking for the ED, expressed no objections to the bail and stated that the interim medical bail could be converted into a permanent one.

Malik sought relief from the Supreme Court, citing chronic kidney disease and other medical conditions. He also requested bail on the grounds of the case’s merits.

What’s the case against Malik?

In a case purportedly connected to the operations of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his associates, the ED had arrested Malik in February 2022.

ED alleged that Malik took over a property in Kurla with the aid of Dawood Ibrahim’s deceased sister Haseena Parkar during the period from 1999 to 2006.

The ED alleged that, since Parkar managed Dawood’s illegal operations, the funds were ultimately channeled into financing terrorism.

The ED’s case against Malik is grounded in an FIR filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) related to Ibrahim, a declared global terrorist and principal accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, as well as his associates, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
