Bridgetown, July 1: Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), confirmed that Team India’s new head coach will take charge of the team from the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

The Indian cricket team is set to tour Sri Lanka for a three-match T20I series and three ODIs, starting on July 27.

In Barbados, Jay Shah informed reporters that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has interviewed and shortlisted two candidates. He also mentioned that the BCCI members will announce the new head coach upon their return to Mumbai.

Former India cricketer VVS Laxman will serve as the team’s interim coach for the Zimbabwe tour, the BCCI secretary confirmed.

“Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but a new coach will join from the Sri Lanka series,” Shah stated.

Gautam Gambhir is a prominent candidate for the role, with many former cricketers backing him as a successful choice for the Indian team’s head coach.

After India defeated South Africa by seven runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 final to regain the coveted trophy after 17 years, head coach Rahul Dravid’s stint came to an end.
