THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Chennai, June 23: In a significant step toward bolstering energy storage infrastructure in Tamil Nadu, NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL) – a wholly-owned subsidiary of NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) – has received the Letter of Award (LoA) from the state-backed Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd for the development of three standalone Battery Energy Storage (BES) systems.

This landmark project marks NLCIL’s first large-scale BES venture, representing a strategic milestone for the company as it diversifies further into the clean energy segment.

Project Details and Implementation Model

The BES systems, each with an aggregate capacity of 250 MW / 500 MWh, will be developed at the following substations in Tamil Nadu-

  • Ottapidaram Sub Station (400/230/110 kV), Tuticorin
  • Anuppankulam Sub Station (400/230/110 kV), Virudhunagar
  • Kayathar Sub Station (400/230/110 kV), Tuticorin

These projects will be executed under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, with Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support, underscoring the government’s push to strengthen the grid and enable seamless renewable energy integration.

Competitive Bidding Success

According to the official press release issued by NLCIL on Sunday, the company secured the award through a competitive bidding process, reinforcing its growing capabilities and competitiveness in the renewable energy and storage domain.

Strategic Significance

The deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems is critical for ensuring grid stability, especially with the increasing share of variable renewable energy in Tamil Nadu’s power mix. These projects are expected to provide essential ancillary services, help manage peak loads, and support the state’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy.
