‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill tabled in Lok Sabha, to be referred to JPC

New Delhi, Dec 17: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill (Constitution 129th Amendment Bill, 2024) in the Lok Sabha today. The government will refer the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation after its introduction

Voting took place in the Lok Sabha on the introduction of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill. A total of 269 votes were cast in favour of the bill, while 198 votes were against it.

For the first time, electronic machines were used for voting in the Lok Sabha. However, after the voting, some MPs raised objections. Responding to this, Home Minister Amit Shah stated that those with objections could submit a slip.

Speaker Om Birla also clarified that members had been informed earlier that if they wished, they could amend their vote through a slip. Before the voting, Speaker Om Birla explained the procedure to all members.

Speaker Om Birla assured the MPs, stating that the minister had mentioned the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the matter. He explained that the JPC would conduct extensive discussions, and members from all parties would be included. Once the bill is brought forward, everyone will be given ample time to debate it. He added that as many days as needed for discussion would be allotted.

Earlier, the Law Minister introduced the bill and proposed that it be sent to the JPC. The bill was presented in the House, and after a voice vote, the opposition demanded a division. Following this, voting took place.
