Ranchi, Nov 30: Jairam Mahto, the central president of the Jharkhand Krantikari Loktantrik Morcha (JKLM) and the party’s sole MLA, appears to be a strong contender for a ministerial position in the Jharkhand Cabinet.

His inclusion could mark a significant political decision, not only for the Kurmi community but also for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the broader political landscape of the state.

JKLM Emerging as a Third Power

In the recent elections, the JKLM demonstrated its growing influence by securing third positions in five constituencies and a second position in one. After the INDIA alliance and the NDA, the JKLM has emerged as the third-largest political force in Jharkhand.

If the JMM offers Jairam Mahto a ministerial position, it could be a strategic move to bring this emerging power into its fold, potentially shifting the state’s political equations in the JMM’s favour.

A Historic Decision for Kurmi Community

The JMM was initially founded by leaders like Binod Bihari Mahto from the Kurmi community. In its early years, Kurmi and Adivasi communities formed the party’s backbone. Over time, however, the party’s focus shifted predominantly toward the tribal community, leading to a disconnect with the Kurmi community, which gradually leaned toward the BJP.

The BJP, in turn, entrusted AJSU leader Sudesh Mahto with the responsibility of consolidating the Kurmi vote bank. Now, with Jairam Mahto emerging as the leading figure of the Kurmi community, the JMM’s decision to include him in the Cabinet could help the party regain the trust of the Kurmi voters.

A Blow to the BJP-AJSU Alliance

The AJSU Party’s formation was aimed at detaching the Kurmi vote bank from the JMM, and its alliance with the BJP furthered this agenda. If the JMM brings Jairam Mahto into the Cabinet, it could significantly weaken the BJP-AJSU alliance’s hold on Kurmi voters.

Influence on Kurmi-Dominated Seats

At least 17 constituencies in Jharkhand are heavily influenced by Kurmi voters. With Jairam Mahto’s inclusion in the Cabinet, the JMM could strengthen its position in these constituencies and potentially secure these seats through strategic alliances.

Responsibility After Tiger Jagannath Mahto

Following the demise of former JMM leader Tiger Jagannath Mahto, Jairam Mahto has emerged as the most prominent leader of the Kurmi community. His appointment as a minister would reflect the JMM’s commitment to the Kurmi community and its broader vision of inclusivity.

A Natural Alliance in the Making

The potential alliance between the JMM and the JKLM could form a natural coalition, bringing political stability to Jharkhand. For JMM’s working president and Chief Minister Hemant Soren, this decision presents an opportunity to further consolidate the party’s strength.

Jairam Mahto’s Inclusion: A Turning Point for Jharkhand Politics and Kurmi-Adivasi Unity

Jairam Mahto’s inclusion in the Cabinet could prove to be a politically, socially, and strategically advantageous move for the JMM. It would not only provide a new direction to Jharkhand’s politics but also strengthen Kurmi-Adivasi unity.

All eyes are now on Hemant Soren to see when and how he seals this historic decision.
