New Delhi, Dec 10: Opposition MPs today gave a notice of a no-confidence motion against Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
The Opposition INDIA bloc submitted the no-confidence motion to the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha.
However, in terms of numbers, the opposition does not have the required strength to remove Jagdeep Dhankhar from his position.
No-confidence motion accuses Dhankhar of partisanship
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated in a post on X that the INDIA alliance had no choice but to formally submit a no-confidence motion against the Rajya Sabha Chairman due to his highly “partisan manner.”
“ALL parties belonging to the INDIA group have had no option but to formally submit a no-confidence motion against the learned Hon’ble Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for the extremely partisan manner in which he has been conducting the proceedings of the Council of States. It has been a very painful decision for the INDIA parties to take, but in the interests of parliamentary democracy they have had to take this step. The motion has just been submitted to the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha,” Jairam Ramesh posted on X.

According to reports, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Pramod Tiwari, along with TMC’s Nadeem Ul Haq and Sagarika Ghosh, submitted the motion to the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha.
Opposition parties have accused the Chairman in the no-confidence motion of not allowing them to speak, claiming that the Chairman is being biased.
They pointed to the previous day’s example, stating that members of the Treasury Bench were given the opportunity to speak, but when opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge rose to speak, he was not allowed.
Opposition has 236 seats in Lok Sabha, 85 seats in Rajya Sabha
Under Article 67(B) of the Constitution, a 14-day notice is required for a no-confidence motion. Additionally, to pass the motion, a majority is needed in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
Parties, including Congress, believe that this motion will help unite the INDI Alliance. In the Lok Sabha, the opposition holds 236 seats out of 543, while in the Rajya Sabha, it has only 85 out of 231 seats.
To pass the motion, a majority is required in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, which makes it highly unlikely for the opposition.
Differences between the opposition parties and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar are continuously increasing. As a result, the opposition has decided to take this step. Parties including Congress believe that this motion will strengthen the INDI Alliance.
