THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Daltonganj, February 11: Ahead of the urban local body elections in Palamu district scheduled for February 23, the district administration has launched an intensive vehicle-checking drive to prevent the movement of illicit arms, liquor and poll-related freebies.

Deputy Superintendent-in-Charge Sadar Rajeev Ranjan led a sudden check of four-wheelers on the inter-district road connecting Chhattisgarh, amid reports of suspicious movement of ‘kalee gariyan’ (black Fortuner vehicles), described locally as a “terror on wheels”.

Palamu Election 2026: Fear, Power and Political Legacy in Focus

The political atmosphere ahead of the Medininagar Municipal Corporation election is intensifying.

A top mayoral candidate is campaigning for a ‘bhay mukt’ (fear-free) town, indirectly referring to the presence of a former gangster-turned civil society activist in local politics. Traders and businessmen are keeping their fingers crossed as the contest sharpens.

The campaign narrative revolves around ‘bhay’ (terror) and ‘virasat’ (inheritance). A close rival is attempting to reclaim political ground lost after her family ruled the municipality for decades, only to lose power. The rival is now keen to regain that political legacy.

Residents fear that this civic body election may witness ‘shakti pradarshan’ (power display), making it more aggressive than previous elections.

Civil and Police Administration on High Alert

Deputy Commissioner Sameera S, who is also the District Election Officer (Municipality), has supported body frisking of dubious and shady elements to prevent the circulation of illegal weapons.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Reeshma Ramesan said the police are fully prepared to ensure a free and fair urban body election and warned that no one would be allowed to get away with unlawful activities.

Officials, however, maintain that Palamu has an outstanding record in conducting Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, and administratively, the civic polls remain manageable.

Yet on the ground, the fight appears bitter, particularly in Medininagar Municipal Corporation and Bishrampur Nagar Parishad, where candidates are aggressively trying to secure an electoral advantage.

Licensed Arms Under Scanner in Palamu District

The Palamu administration is closely monitoring any celebratory, intimidatory or flamboyant display of licensed arms, a practice not uncommon in the region’s feudal social setting.

Administrative sources confirmed that any violation will attract action under the Arms Act, including suspension or cancellation of licence and seizure of weapons.

According to official data:

  • Total licensed arms in Palamu district: 1,182
  • Medininagar: 601
  • Bishrampur: 68
  • Chhaterpur: 43
  • Harihurganj: 37
  • Hussainabad: 118

These figures apply to police station limits, not individual wards. Officials indicate that nearly every ward has licensed arms holders.

Ward distribution:

  • Medininagar Municipal Corporation – 35 wards
  • Bishrampur Nagar Parishad – 20 wards
  • Chhaterpur, Harihurganj and Hussainabad Nagar Panchayats – 16 wards each

SP Reeshma Ramesan said the police are monitoring the transit of arms and keeping a strict vigil.

Licensed arms holders may seek exemption from depositing weapons on genuine grounds of threat to life and property. Such cases will be examined by a screening committee.

“Any show-off of arms will invite legal action,” the SP said.

Deputy Commissioner Sameera S, also the District Arms Magistrate, warned that extensive checking will continue and “no aberration of any kind in respect of arms will be tolerated.”

The State Election Commission has directed strict action against licensed arms holders who:

  • Are on bail
  • Have a history of poll violence
  • Possess criminal disposition
  • Attempt to create fear during elections

Such individuals may be directed to deposit their weapons if found to be a threat to public tranquillity during electioneering.

Women Candidates and Generational Shift in Medininagar

There are 11 women candidates in the Medininagar Municipal Corporation election.

Among them is one Gen Z candidate, contesting against mostly older-generation “Nani-Dadi” type candidates. She is making her political debut, with her father — a veteran politician — guiding her campaign strategy.

Palamu police continue daily operations against illicit liquor dens and poppy cultivation in its vegetative stage, reinforcing election-time vigilance.

With arms monitoring, vehicle checking, liquor crackdowns and high-stakes mayoral campaigns, the Palamu urban body elections 2026 are shaping up to be closely contested and politically charged.
