Speaking to this correspondent on Saturday, Shekhawat said, “I believe children deserve equal opportunity to have such a celebration. Children in conflict with law made beautiful diyas. They showed their zeal and passion.”

“Our specially disabled children deserve the same opportunity to have the celebration. I gifted the diyas. It’s my way of sharing happiness” said Shekhawat.

He appealed to people to purchase more of the handmade diyas, saying that their support would encourage the children and help recognise their talent.

Around 1,500 Diyas Made by Children

Piyush Kumar said the children had made around 1,500 earthen lamps and expressed hope that people would come forward to purchase them.

“Children in conflict with law have made around 1,500 diyas. I wish people should buy them.” said Piyush Kumar.

The initiative aims to provide the children with an opportunity to showcase their abilities and participate in the festive season through their creative work.

Clay Procured from Pokhraha

The clay used to make the diyas was procured from a plot of land at Pokhraha, sources said. The clay available there is free of sandy grains, making it suitable for preparing earthen lamps.

Avinash Dev, a former functionary of the Jharkhand Mati Kala Board, said former Palamu Deputy Commissioner A. Dodde had arranged an electric pottery wheel at the Observation Home to facilitate such activities for the children.

A child in conflict with law is a person who was below 18 years of age at the time of committing an offence, as defined under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.

The initiative highlights the importance of providing children in conflict with law opportunities to develop their skills, gain encouragement and participate in society without being defined by the stigma associated with their circumstances.
