Daltonganj, August 27: A team of the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) rescued a Brahminy Kite from the Mahuadanr range on Tuesday, forest officials said.
The rescued bird has been temporarily housed at More Ghar (Peacock Shelter) and is being kept under observation, said forest guard Vivek Vishal.
‘Brahminy Kite is a bird of prey’
Kumar Ashish, Deputy Director of the South Division of PTR, said the Brahminy Kite is a bird of prey but is distinct from an eagle.
“The Brahminy Kite is different from an eagle. It is definitely a bird of prey, but with a difference,” Ashish said.
He said the species is known to take food from other birds and also feed on carrion.
“The Brahminy Kite steals food from other birds. It also feeds on carrion, or dead meat. In that sense, it is a scavenging bird,” Ashish said.

Bird suspected to have been kept by family
Sources said the rescued Brahminy Kite appeared to have been raised by a family, apparently in good faith.
Forest officials, however, pointed out that keeping native wild birds as pets is prohibited under wildlife protection laws.
“The rescued bird is fine and is under the watch of the PTR team,” Vishal said.
The bird will remain under observation at the shelter until forest officials decide on the next course of action.
