Daltonganj, February 22: A total of 246 polling parties were dispatched on Sunday for an equal number of polling stations across five urban local bodies in Palamu district, as voting is set to take place on Monday, February 23.
The dispatch process at Daltonganj remained smooth and orderly, with polling personnel appearing relaxed — a contrast to the high-pressure atmosphere often witnessed during Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections.
Calm Atmosphere, Better Urban Connectivity
Officials noted that urban local body elections are generally easier to manage due to improved road connectivity, better access to food and facilities, and stronger security presence. Unlike rural assignments, urban poll duties are considered less strenuous.
A polling official assigned to Harihurganj Nagar Panchayat displayed a replaced ballot box after noticing a defect in the earlier one. When asked about its operation, he smiled and said, “Bara aasaan hai” (It’s very easy).
Leak-Proof Security for Strong Room
Security arrangements have been described as “leak-proof” by officials.
After voting concludes, polled ballot boxes will be stored in a strong room guarded exclusively by State Armed Police personnel, with no Home Guard deployment in or around the facility.
Superintendent of Police Reeshma Ramesan said:
“There is adequate security bandobast. Voting will be free and fair.”
At polling booths, a mixed deployment of police and Home Guard jawans will be in place, with enhanced security at hyper-sensitive and sensitive booths.
Medical Kits, Ambulances on Standby
To ensure the well-being of polling and security personnel, medical kits have been distributed.
Civil Surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Srivastava confirmed that the kits contain medicines for cold, fever, minor injuries, oral rehydration salts, bandages and antiseptic supplies.
District Election Officer (Municipality) and Deputy Commissioner Sameera S stated:
“Medical kits are available. There is no provision for ANMs at booths. Ambulances will remain on standby.”
Administration Issues Strict SOP Warning
Authorities have cautioned polling personnel against violating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Palamu had faced serious controversies in the 1980s and 1990s over the improper transportation of ballot boxes in private vehicles after polling. Officials are determined to prevent any such repeat.
Sources confirmed that strict instructions have been issued to ensure:
- No private transportation of ballot boxes
- Full adherence to election protocol
- Zero tolerance for procedural lapses
Ensuring a free and fair urban election in Palamu remains the administration’s top priority.
Political Undercurrents Surface Before Polls
A day before campaigning ended, two former gangsters-turned-civil society activists were seen meeting traders and businessmen, reportedly seeking to reassure them of their goodwill.
Sources suggest the move was part of a calculated poll strategy to consolidate support for a political party-backed candidate. However, members of the business community remain cautious.
Deputy Development Commissioner Md Jawed Hussain said:
“I will respond to poll-related queries in my capacity as DDC, not as the in-charge City Commissioner.”
Returning Officer for the Mayor election and Additional Collector Kundan Kumar added:
“The High Court has made observations regarding the conduct of the election. We are determined to ensure a fair poll.”
