PM Modi visits Wayanad to assess landslide damage and relief operations

Wayanad, August 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kerala on Saturday to visit the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad.

According to officials, Modi landed at Kannur Airport around 11 a.m. in the Air India One aircraft, where he was welcomed by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. They also mentioned that from Kannur, the Prime Minister proceeded to Wayanad via an Air Force helicopter.

PM Modi carried out an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas of Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattom.

As per officials, Governor Khan, Chief Minister Vijayan, and Union Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum & Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, also accompanied Modi to Wayanad. They mentioned that the Air Force helicopter landed at SKMJ Higher Secondary School in Kalpetta, from where Modi travelled by road to visit the landslide-affected areas.

This visit by the Prime Minister comes at a time when the Kerala government has requested Rs 2,000 crore in aid for rehabilitation and relief efforts in the disaster-stricken region.

PM Modi visits relief camp and hospital

Officials said that the rescue team in Wayanad briefed the Prime Minister about the evacuation efforts.

Officials reported that Modi visited relief camps and hospitals, where he met with victims and people who had been evacuated from the landslide-affected areas. Following this, Modi is expected to chair a review meeting where he will be briefed in detail about the disaster and the ongoing relief efforts.

In the Wayanad district of Kerala, massive landslides on July 30 claimed the lives of at least 226 people, with many still missing in the area.
