Chandigarh, Feb 19: Indian cricketer Shubman Gill was named the ‘State Icon’ for this year’s Lok Sabha elections by the office of Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Monday.

Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C declared that Punjab native Gill, recognized among cricket enthusiasts, particularly the youth, has been selected as the ‘State Icon’ which will help achieve a voting turnout of more than 70 per cent during the forthcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Inspire and boost voter turnouts

He said that Gill will participate in a number of voter campaigns to make sure the “Is Vaar 70 Paar” goal is met. Apart from Gill Tarsem Jassar, a well-known singer from Punjab, was also named a ‘State Icon’ earlier.

Sibin C added that all of the Punjab’s deputy commissioners were asked to identify the regions where the voter turnout was low in the previous elections during a meeting that took place last Friday. He said that Gill and Jassar’s awareness initiatives and appeals in these areas would inspire voters and boost turnout.

The Chief Electoral Officer urged voters of all ages to cast their ballots in huge numbers and expressed optimism that young people who were first-time voters would be motivated to exercise their right to vote by Gill and Jassar.
