Kapurthala, Nov 23: Punjab Police reported on Thursday that a police constable lost his life, and three other police personnel sustained injuries during an exchange of gunfire between Sultanpur Lodhi police and a faction of Nihang Sikhs.

The gunfire exchange occurred due to a continuing conflict between two factions of Nihangs vying for control over a Gurdwara in Sultanpur Lodhi, located in Punjab’s Kapurthala district.

According to an earlier press release, Baba Balveer Singh, the head of the Baba Buddha Dal, had taken over the front of a Gurudwara, where his two aides, Nirvair Singh and Jagjit Singh, were seated.

The press release additionally stated that on November 21, 2023, Baba Maan Singh Vallo, the leader of Baba Buddha Dal’s second breakaway faction, with 15 to 20 of his allies forcibly entered the Gurudwara.

Upon entering the Gurudwara, the faction led by Baba Maan Singh restrained Nirvair Singh with a rope, assaulted Jagjit Singh with a weapon and confiscated his ammunition, mobile phone and money. Subsequently, the group took control of the Gurdwara and other surrounding areas.

Promptly responding to the situation, the Sultanpur Lodhi Police took immediate action and arrested 10 individuals affiliated with Baba Maan Singh’s group, which was followed by the gunfire incident.

A significant police force has been stationed in the area.
