RANCHI, October 15: Renowned Jharkhand ophthalmologist and social worker Dr Bharti Kashyap has been honoured with the prestigious by the Women Ophthalmologists Society of India (WOS) for her contributions to women’s healthcare, child eye health and the expansion of medical services in rural and tribal areas.
The award was presented at the inaugural ceremony of WOS by All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) President Prof. Dr J. S. Titiyal and Eye Bank Association of India Vice-President Dr Namrata Sharma.
The recognition highlights Dr Kashyap’s sustained efforts to improve access to healthcare, particularly through large-scale cervical cancer screening programmes for women and eye screening initiatives for schoolchildren across Jharkhand.
Six Lakh Women Screened for Cervical Cancer
Under Dr Bharti Kashyap’s leadership as president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Jharkhand Women’s Doctors Wing, an extensive cervical cancer screening campaign was conducted across the state.
Between April 2021 and May 2026, more than six lakh women were screened for cervical cancer, according to the information provided by the organisation.
Special attention was given to remote and underserved areas, including Pakur, Santhal Pargana and Kolhan, to improve access to screening, medical counselling and treatment.
The wing’s official partnership with the National Health Mission (NHM) helped extend the programme’s reach to communities across the state.
Eye Screening for More Than 25 Lakh Schoolchildren
Dr Kashyap has also played a significant role in efforts to protect children’s vision. Through initiatives targeting government schools in Jharkhand, more than 25 lakh children underwent eye examinations.
Children diagnosed with vision problems received spectacles free of cost. Hundreds of children suffering from cataracts also underwent surgery, helping them return to their studies and everyday activities.
The initiative has been particularly beneficial for children from economically disadvantaged families, enabling them to receive timely eye care.
From Clinical Practice to Community Healthcare
Dr Kashyap has worked to extend ophthalmic services beyond hospitals to rural and underserved communities, linking medical care with broader social welfare initiatives.
In recognition of her contributions to women’s empowerment, she received the Nari Shakti Puraskar from the President of India in 2017.
The WOS Special Leadership Award adds to the recognition of her work in medical leadership, women’s health and public healthcare delivery.
Dr Vibhuti Kashyap Receives Best Teacher Award
In another recognition for Ranchi’s ophthalmology community, vitreoretinal surgeon Dr Vibhuti Kashyap was honoured with the Best Teacher Award by the Women Ophthalmologists Society.
The award recognises her contribution to academic training and quality teaching for young women ophthalmologists.
