Ranchi, Nov 13: Ranchi Sadar Hospital has achieved a remarkable medical milestone by successfully performing a rare and highly complex brain and spine (cranio-cervical junction) surgery — a feat usually associated with top-tier corporate hospitals.
The patient had been suffering from severe headaches, dizziness, neck stiffness, and limb weakness for several months. After consulting multiple private hospitals, he was advised that the required surgery was extremely risky and would cost several lakhs. Seeking affordable care, he approached Ranchi Sadar Hospital, where Neurosurgeon Dr. Vikas Kumar evaluated his condition and decided to undertake the surgery.

Successful Foramen Magnum Decompression Surgery
Dr. Vikas Kumar explained that the procedure involved a foramen magnum decompression, which relieves pressure at the junction between the brain and spinal cord — known as the craniovertebral junction. “The operation was successful, and the patient is now able to walk,” Dr. Vikas said, describing the outcome as a significant success for the hospital’s neurosurgery unit.

Officials Laud the Achievement
Ranchi Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat Kumar and Sadar Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bimlesh Singh commended Dr. Vikas Kumar and his team for the successful surgery, calling it a moment of pride for the hospital.
“The achievement of Dr. Vikas and his team is a matter of great pride for Ranchi Sadar Hospital. The hospital is no longer limited to general medical care; it now provides advanced neurosurgery facilities as well,” said Dr. Prabhat Kumar.

A Message of Confidence in Public Healthcare
Dr. Bimlesh Singh highlighted that the successful operation was not just a medical accomplishment but also a powerful message that rare and complex surgeries can be performed in government hospitals too.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Vikas Kumar credited the hospital’s leadership for their support, saying, “This complex operation became possible due to the guidance and encouragement of Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat Kumar and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bimlesh Singh.”
