A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan issued the order while noting that the court would not be used as a “political battleground.” The order came in response to several petitions, including those calling for a court-supervised investigation into the issue.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated to the bench that if the allegations had any basis in truth, they would be intolerable.
He suggested that a senior official from the central government could oversee the SIT’s investigation.
