New Delhi, Nov 21: The Supreme Court on Friday said it will examine a series of petitions contesting the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) programme being carried out in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and several other states.
The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant, SVN Bhatti and Joymalya Bagchi, issued notices to the poll panel after multiple fresh applications were filed by political figures challenging the revision process under various legal grounds.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing in one of the petitions arising from Kerala, argued that the matter required urgent attention as the state is preparing for upcoming local body elections. Responding to this, the court scheduled the Kerala-related challenges for hearing on November 26.

Cases relating to SIR revisions in the remaining states are expected to be heard in the first or second week of December. The court is simultaneously considering earlier petitions questioning the legality and necessity of a nationwide electoral roll revision exercise.
