Jamshedpur, August 27: Marking the 167th birth anniversary of Sir Dorabji Tata, Tata Steel on Thursday inaugurated “Celebration of Sports: The Sir Dorabji Tata Legacy”, a special exhibition tracing the remarkable contribution of one of India’s foremost nation-builders to the development of sport and the Olympic movement in the country.
The exhibition, which opened in Kolkata earlier this week before moving to Jamshedpur, brings together rare archival photographs, historic correspondence, sporting memorabilia and curated narratives showcasing Sir Dorabji Tata’s enduring belief in sport as a means of character-building, national pride and social progress.
Exhibition inaugurated at JRD Tata Sports Complex
The commemorative programme began with floral tributes at Sir Dorabji Tata Park, followed by the inauguration of the exhibition at the JRD Tata Sports Complex by D.B. Sundara Ramam, Vice-President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel.
The event was attended by Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary, President, Tata Workers’ Union, Dr T. Mukherjee, senior retired Tata Steel executives and other distinguished guests.
Dorabji Tata’s pioneering role in Indian sport
Sir Dorabji Tata was a pioneering force behind organised sport in India and played a crucial role in enabling the country’s participation in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, supporting India’s first Olympic contingent.
He was also instrumental in establishing the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and became its first president in 1927, helping lay the institutional foundations for India’s Olympic journey.
Coming ahead of the IOA’s centenary year in 2027, the exhibition revisits these landmark milestones and celebrates a sporting vision that continues to resonate nearly a century later.
Panel discussion explores India’s sporting journey
The commemorative programme also featured a panel discussion titled “A Celebration of Sports”, bringing together sports historian and author Boria Majumdar, Olympian and Arjuna Award-winning archer Dola Banerjee, and internationally acclaimed archer, Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Purnima Mahato.
The panel explored India’s sporting evolution, Sir Dorabji Tata’s pioneering contribution and the importance of sustained institutional support in building a strong sporting ecosystem.
Tata Steel’s continuing commitment to sports
The exhibition also traces Tata Steel’s longstanding commitment to sports. Over the decades, the company has invested in grassroots talent identification, high-performance training, sporting infrastructure and athlete-support programmes, helping nurture numerous national and international champions.
By placing Sir Dorabji Tata’s historic contribution alongside Tata Steel’s contemporary sporting initiatives, the exhibition highlights the continuing relevance of his belief in the transformative power of sport.
A legacy beyond the sporting arena
Sir Dorabji Tata’s legacy extends far beyond sport. As Chairman of Tata Steel, he steered the company through some of its most challenging years while remaining deeply committed to its people.
His contributions to industrial development, philanthropy and institution-building helped shape modern India, with his values continuing to find expression through institutions working in education, healthcare, scientific research, community development and sport.
The exhibition will remain open to the public at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur, until August 29, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the life and legacy of a visionary whose faith in human potential helped lay the foundations of Indian sport and continues to inspire generations of athletes.
