Jamshedpur, October 28: Sona Devi University participated in an online lecture organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under its ‘Chetna Shrankhla Lecture Series’ during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October 2026, highlighting the growing need for digital safety amid the rapid expansion of technology.
The lecture, titled “Cybercrime Uncovered: Threats, Prevention & Response,” focused on emerging cyber threats, preventive measures and appropriate responses to cyber incidents.
The university was represented by its registrar, Nit Nayana.
She emphasised that cybersecurity has become an integral part of everyday life as the use of the internet, digital payments, online banking and social media continues to grow. While these technologies offer convenience, they also expose users to increasingly sophisticated cyber fraud.
She urged citizens to avoid suspicious links and messages, protect their personal and financial information, and exercise caution while conducting online transactions. She added that cybersecurity awareness goes beyond technical knowledge and includes responsible digital behaviour and personal safety.
Vice-Chancellor Stresses Safe Digital Practices
Vice-Chancellor Professor Braj Mohan Pat Pingua said modern education must equip students not only with academic knowledge but also with the skills needed to navigate an increasingly technology-driven environment.
He stressed the importance of critical thinking, verifying online information and adopting safe digital practices.
He also cautioned students against fraudulent investment schemes, misleading online offers and attempts to misuse digital identities. He urged them to verify the authenticity of online proposals before trusting them or sharing personal information.
He added that cybersecurity was a collective responsibility shared by individuals, educational institutions and government agencies.
Lecture Highlights Emerging Cyber Threats
The session covered several emerging forms of cybercrime, including investment fraud through social media, fake online bookings, e-commerce scams, deepfake-enabled identity misuse and fraud involving suspicious Android Package Kit (APK) applications.
Participants were also introduced to official cybercrime reporting and assistance mechanisms, including the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the cybercrime helpline 1930 and the ‘Cyber Dost’ awareness initiative.
The session highlighted the importance of reporting cyber incidents promptly, particularly financial fraud, to improve the chances of timely intervention.
Sona Devi University reaffirmed its commitment to promoting cybersecurity awareness, digital literacy and responsible digital citizenship among students, faculty members and the wider community. The university emphasised that safe and responsible technology use is an essential component of contemporary education.
