PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, May 15: Sona Devi University, Ghatshila, on Friday launched a special environmental awareness campaign ahead of World Environment Day 2026, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and climate action.

The programme was organised at the university’s Vivekananda Auditorium, where students, faculty members and university officials participated in activities promoting environmental awareness and responsible living.

VC Urges Students to Avoid Single-Use Plastics

Addressing the gathering, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Braj Mohan Pat Pingua stressed the need for both individual and collective efforts to protect the environment.

He urged students and staff to eliminate the use of single-use plastics and adopt energy-saving practices, saying environmental conservation must become a shared social responsibility.

Awareness Programmes Till May 23

Registrar Dr. Nit Nayana said the university will organise a series of awareness programmes from May 15 to May 23 in line with University Grants Commission (UGC) directives.

She said the initiative forms part of the nationwide pre-campaign for World Environment Day 2026 under the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) framework of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).

Focus on Climate Change and Sustainable Practices

This year’s World Environment Day theme, “Climate Change,” aims to encourage environmentally sustainable lifestyles and promote pro-planet actions.

The university’s campaign will focus on themes such as energy conservation, water preservation, reducing waste and e-waste, avoiding single-use plastics, healthier lifestyles, and increasing green cover.

The university also plans to strengthen campus sustainability initiatives with emphasis on responsible waste management, resource conservation, and long-term environmental stewardship among students and staff.
