New Delhi, Dec 1: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant an extension for the six-month deadline to register Waqf properties under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
A bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih advised applicants to approach the Waqf Tribunal for relief, noting that the Act itself provides a remedy.
“Any applicant facing genuine difficulties in registering properties on the portal can seek an extension from the Tribunal,” the court said.

Applicants had contended that their issues went beyond mere registration on the UMEED portal, also involving the digitisation of Waqf properties. They argued that by the time the Tribunal addresses these challenges, the December 6 deadline could lapse.
The bench clarified that applicants would not be held responsible if technical issues delay registration.
“If the Tribunal permits, your six-month period will be counted, and your application will be considered. No prior permission from this Court is required,” the judges stated, emphasizing that the Tribunal remains the proper forum to resolve such difficulties.
