During the proceedings on the appointment of Jharkhand DGP Anurag Gupta, senior advocate Kapil Sibal pointed out that petitions on the same issue were pending both in the Jharkhand High Court and the Supreme Court, which was not proper.

Following this, the Amicus Curiae drew attention to the petition filed in the Jharkhand High Court and requested that the matter be taken up directly by the Supreme Court.

The Court accepted this request and decided to hear Public Interest Litigation (PIL) No. 1194/2025, filed in the High Court by Babulal Marandi.

The Supreme Court has further ordered that the petition filed in the High Court be clubbed with the original Prakash Singh vs Union of India case and fixed October 27 as the date of hearing.

The PIL filed in the High Court challenges the validity of the appointment rules framed by the Jharkhand government for the post of DGP. It was under these rules that Anurag Gupta was appointed as the state’s DGP.
