THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Jamshedpur, October 24: For many young people in Jamadoba and Sijua, a career in the defence forces, police or paramilitary services represents more than a job aspiration—it is a dream of serving the nation. Through its Uniform Services Coaching Programme, Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) is helping turn these ambitions into reality by providing aspiring candidates with academic guidance, physical training and the confidence to compete for recruitment opportunities.

Launched in November 2022, the programme aims to address challenges faced by young people from Tata Steel Foundation’s core operational areas, particularly limited access to quality coaching, structured physical training and career counselling. By offering comprehensive preparation and continued mentorship, the initiative is helping candidates take meaningful steps towards careers in uniformed services.

Comprehensive Training and Continued Mentorship

The programme offers academic coaching, physical fitness training, career counselling, mock examinations and personalised mentorship. Initially designed as a one-year course, it has been restructured into an intensive six-month programme from the current financial year, incorporating lessons learned from previous batches.

The Foundation’s support continues beyond the formal coaching period. Candidates receive assistance with written examinations, doubt-clearing sessions and physical fitness assessments while awaiting suitable recruitment opportunities.

The programme prepares candidates for recruitment into the Indian Army, Agniveer, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, National Defence Academy (NDA), Staff Selection Commission General Duty (SSC GD), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Railway Protection Force (RPF), state police and other paramilitary services.

The curriculum covers Mathematics, Reasoning, English and Hindi, General Science, Polity and Defence Awareness, in line with recruitment examination requirements. Each centre has three instructors—one physical training instructor and two faculty members responsible for academic subjects. Classes are conducted from Monday to Friday, with physical training sessions in the morning and classroom instruction in the afternoon.

Seventeen Candidates Secure Government Jobs

Since its launch, the programme has enrolled 93 candidates across the Jamadoba and Sijua centres. So far, 17 candidates—12 men and five women—have secured government jobs in services and recruitment categories including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force (BSF), SSC GD, Agniveer and Bihar Police.

The successful candidates come from several localities, including Patia Basti, Bhelatand, Malkera, Jorapokhar, Sijua 6 No., Sijua 12 No., Bhowra and Lahargora.

In another encouraging development, 21 candidates have qualified in the Home Guard recruitment examination and completed their medical tests. They are awaiting the final merit list. Six of these candidates are women, reflecting the growing participation of female aspirants in uniformed services.

From Setback to Success

For Anand Kumar of Pasitand, Malkera, who is now serving in the ITBP in Chandigarh, the programme helped turn a setback into success. After missing selection in the SSC GD examination by just a few marks, he found renewed motivation through the Foundation’s coaching initiative.

“I had always dreamed of serving in the armed forces, but after missing the SSC GD selection by just a few marks, I felt discouraged. Joining Tata Steel Foundation’s Youth Uniform Coaching Classes gave me the guidance, discipline and confidence I needed. With my mentors’ and family’s support, I worked harder than ever and finally achieved my goal. Today, serving in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police is a source of pride for my family and me,” he said.

For Asha Mahato of Sijua 12 No., the dream of wearing the Army uniform continues to inspire her daily efforts. She believes the programme’s structured training, discipline and mentorship are helping her move closer to her goal.

“Wearing the Army uniform has always been my dream. Every day of training brings me one step closer to that goal. The discipline, guidance and support I receive here motivate me to work harder and stay focused. I am confident that with dedication and perseverance, I will turn my dream into reality,” she said.

Expansion to Other Locations Planned

Building on the programme’s progress in Jamadoba and Sijua, Tata Steel Foundation has replicated the initiative in West Bokaro, with plans to expand it to other locations.

By combining academic preparation, physical fitness and sustained mentorship, the programme is creating opportunities for local youth to pursue government careers, improve their economic prospects and fulfil their aspirations of serving the nation.
